 There are two marriage acts govern court marriages. Same day court marriage is possible under Hindu marriage act, however usually 30 day notice period is required for court marriage under special marriage act. 


 

                     Under hindu marriage act both parties should be hindu i.e sikhs , jains, buddists etc can also register marriage under Hindu marriage act. This is usually a traditional marriage and follows religious rituals for marriage. Once marriage is performed at temple or some other place same can be registered under Hindu marriage act. Usually marriage registration under Hindu marriage act is very fast and can be done in same day if documents are complete and other conditions are met eg. couple able to provide marriage proof, age proofs etc. Couple need to be present in front of magistrate personally for marriage registration. Advantage of marriage under Hindu marriage act is faster registration.

                If Couple has no hurry to get married, or they don't meet condition of Hindu marriage act, they need to get their marriage registered under  special marriage act. Eligibility criteria is almost similar for both marriage acts. eg. minimum 21 years of age for Groom and 18 years for Bride. Both of them should be of sound mental health and both of them should be single etc. Under special marriage act after filing application of marriage there is a waiting period of 30 days before marriage registration. 

              The notice is usually displayed at notice board of marriage registrar office. The process of notice is completely transparent and notice is not sent by post to parents of couple without consent.
